Can you make a living as a hypnotherapist?

Therpist helping someone during a therapy sessionOne of the questions we get asked all the time is ‘are there enough people who want hypnotherapy?’ but what they are really asking is if they can make a living as a hypnotherapist. The answer is of course yes; we wouldn’t teach it if there wasn’t a real need for well trained, confident, competent hypnotherapists.  In fact, the market is expanding every day.

There are a few reasons for this, the first being that hypnotherapy is becoming more mainstream.  Of course you will get people making jokes about not looking into your eyes, but many of your future clients will already know someone who has had hypnotherapy, have had a friend recommend it, seen a positive article about it and even seen it on TV (though some of the stuff on TV is questionable at best!).  Some doctors are recommending hypnotherapy, the Royal College of Midwives recognises hypnobirthing, hypnosis is recommended as a treatment for IBS and hypnotherapists are increasingly helping mental health charities support the people that need them.

The second is less positive, but equally important.  As we are seen to be more mainstream we are also making up for the gap in mental health services available.  This is not to say we treat the most serious or complex cases, but there are at least 1 in 4 people each year who suffer with a mental health challenge but struggle to get adequate support.  That can be a teen struggling with social anxiety, a new mum struggling post-partum, over-worked executives, frazzled and stressed out parents, a person drinking more than they ought to, an OCD flair up etc. Hypnotherapy is increasingly seen as a possible way of getting back on track.

Thirdly, the opportunities in hypnotherapy are vast; you can help people with mental health problems, help them give birth, stop smoking, stop drinking, get a better relationship with food, pass their driving test, win that competition, make that speech, pass that exam, sleep the whole night through, get over their ex, increase chances of getting pregnant, stop biting their nails, feel confident to go for a promotion, get on that plane, approach that person they’ve liked for so long, stop arguing with their partner, be calmer around their kids, come to terms with a significant loss, be confident they can handle whatever the world has in store for them…

When you work as a hypnotherapist you will become part of one of the fastest growing professions in the UK and if you choose to work as a solution focused hypnotherapist you’ll be working at the forefront of your profession, with access to the most current brain research and how it impacts your therapy.

10 Reasons Solution Focused Hypnotherapists LOVE their Career

smiling orange fruit or a happy hypnotherapist you decideYou’ll recognise a solution focused hypnotherapist by their smile, their confidence and their openness about what they do and exactly how they help people, but what makes a solution focused hypnotherapist love their career so much? We asked some of our friends and graduate solution focused hypnotherapists and this is what they said.

1: You’ll feel like a superhero, because you are literally changing people’s lives every day.  What you do, as a solution focused hypnotherapist, is important; you help people get their lives back on track. By changing their world you are changing the world. You make a positive difference.

2: You are in charge of when and how much you work. If you are fed up with working for other people, doing a job that isn’t important or being stopped from doing what’s right in a job that is important, being a solution focused hypnotherapist will give you flexibility and freedom to work at times that suit you.

3: You can work from home.  Although many SF hypnotherapists work in clinics, many also work from a dedicated therapy room in their home.  Quite often their children have moved out and they have space to use, or convert a garage or summerhouse into a therapy room.  Wherever you decide to work, it is up to you.

4: It is simple.  Solution focused hypnotherapy is a modern form of hypnotherapy that, although isn’t necessarily easy to do, is simple for your clients to understand and because they ‘get it’ they move forward quickly.  Simple means that what seemed like overwhelming issues, for your clients, can be overcome by making consistent small changes.  It makes the impossible, possible.

5: It is evidence and science based.  Many people who were, or continue to be, in the medical profession train for a career as a solution focused hypnotherapist because this is one of the few forms of hypnotherapy that is evidence based and underpinned by the latest findings in neuroscience.

6: It is safe.  Solution focused hypnotherapy is safe for you and safe for your clients because we don’t use potentially damaging, old fashioned or out of date therapy.  We know that, in order to resolve the past it is NOT necessary and sometimes unhelpful or harmful to do delve into it. Your clients enjoy it more and, because we explain how the brain works, feel in control and empowered when they are working with you.

7: It is fun.  It is no wonder solution focused hypnotherapist love their career; in solution focused hypnotherapy we encourage our clients to enjoy their sessions, laughter is helpful and we can laugh with them.  We don’t go through boxes or tissue every week, our clients look forward to their sessions and feel better after each one.

8: Lots of variety.  In the morning you might be helping someone stop smoking, follow that helping someone get back to work after a bought of depression, in the afternoon help someone go for a promotion, and finish the day helping a teenager overcome exam nerves.  You’ll never be bored because every day is different and you always end the day feeling liked you’ve helped.

9: You’ll be learning all the time and can pursue your interests. Every day we are discovering more about how the brain works and the field of neuroscience and neuroscience based therapies is developing fast.  This means, as your training school, we want to keep up with those advances.  Rather than relying on outmoded thinking we find out what the best of the best of therapy has to offer and use that to keep you up to date in your learning.

10: You have control of your career and your finances. Hypnotherapy is currently the fastest growing industry in the UK and solution focused hypnotherapy, as taught by CPHT, is recognised as one of the most successful and reputable forms of hypnotherapy that delivers consistent results.

Bonus 11: Solution focused hypnotherapists trust the quality of their training.  Your training is independently assessed, has a nationally recognised qualification and gives you the opportunity to go on to train for the most advanced approved hypnotherapy level training in the UK.  CPHT is highly respected within the hypnotherapy community and the founder, David Newton, has been interviewed for Radio 4 among others and spoken at the largest hypnotherapy conference in the UK.

Reasons To Become A Hypnotherapist

I’m Gary Johannes and I’m the senior lecturer here at CPHT Kent.  I also run CPHT Peterborough, CPHT Nottingham and CPHT Birmingham.  I never expected to become a hypnotherapist, let alone a lecturer with the school that trained me, so you might not be surprised to know that I think hypnotherapy training might be for you too!

I’ve not always been a hypnotherapist – in fact just like many of my students I’ve had a varied career. I only went on the CPHT Bristol Hypnotherapy training course to get more personal and business development, so I could be better at my job. However, what happened next was nothing short of a miracle, and my life hasn’t been the same since. This is my story and I hope it inspires you to seriously think about training as a hypnotherapist, because it is the best decision I ever made.

The first thing that amazed me about my training was that I was taught how to hypnotise people and told that I needed to find volunteers to work with right from the first weekend.  After that the course became even more exciting, gradually building up my skills and knowledge, month on month, developing my confidence and experience, even before I qualified.

Having never wanted to become a hypnotherapist, I completely changed my mind; because I’d fallen in love with being able to help so many different people – whether it was anxiety in their life, a phobia, or being a confident presenter and so much more.  I knew I would start a practice, and I did; I built my practice up to a full time career in just 9 months, some of the speed was my previous experience in business, but my training had given me such a valuable skill and such a brilliant way of talking about it that I had people recommending me very quickly and gained a solid reputation within my local area.

The other thing for me is it gives me freedom to live the lifestyle I want.  I control how many hours I work and when I work. I choose whether I want time off or whether I want to work every hour available. It is my choice and it feels so amazing to be completely in control of my own career and destiny; I don’t know how many other people can say that in these uncertain times.

But what about you?

We get such a wide variety of people coming on our courses from very diverse experiences, careers and backgrounds.  We get people who are working full time and want to change their careers, teachers who feel it is time to make a positive change and those who want to escape corporate life. They know that this training will enable them to be more in control of their careers.

We get people who are already qualified in the therapy or medical world, whether that be in the NHS (we’ve trained several nurses and ex-nurses), or someone working as a counsellor, massage therapist, chiropractor, personal trainer.  Many people who work in the wellbeing and health field want to add this particular hypnotherapy training to their skills, often because it is based on the latest methods of therapy, backed up by neuroscience.

We get people who have been a full-time parent and want to get back into the work place and people who have never quite found their calling but just know they want to help people.  Whether our students want to work full or part time, we know this training will help them support a positive way of living.

Most of all when people come on our courses they want to see how they can fit the course around their busy lives and get the qualification they want and to start their new careers.  Our course is perfect for that because we train one weekend a month, which means it can fit around your current work and life commitments, which is so important when you are training for a professional qualification and new career.

One of the big questions I get asked on a regular basis is, how do I fit in all the course work around my everyday life? Over the years we’ve been running hypnotherapy courses here we’ve had all sorts of people, we’ve had people working full-time employment, people with young families (even nursing mums), people working away from home and people who have just come back into the work place after being a parent or taking a career break for many many years. They have all said something similar – it is doable, how it is flexible enough to fit around current commitments.

What also sets us apart is that we are solution focused. That means we work with people to get the best out-c0me for them, but its future paced, we also use the most clinically proven techniques and the most modern neuroscience research to back up everything we do so we know we are always at the forefront of the hypnotherapy world.

If you’ve been inspired by Gary’s story, why not take charge of your future too and apply to be on our next course.  Training is over 10 months and you’ll be working towards the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD), the only nationally recognised and independently assessed hypnotherapy qualification in the UK.  Click here to apply now

Can I train as a hypnotherapist if I’m a stay at home mum?

Sarah had aced being a mum for 20 years and had safely ushered her youngest son off to university.  Whilst she appreciated every moment of that time, she acknowledged that it hadn’t necessarily helped her with her confidence at being ‘Sarah’ or getting back out to work.

I had become an expert at getting the stains out of rugby kits and could bake a reasonable cake but the thought of going out to work was very daunting!

baby and puppyAs Sarah says – over the last couple of years we had, as a family, seen first-hand the true value of hypnotherapy and what powerful change it can bring about.  My husband had been commuting for five hours a day and after nine years this started to take its toll and he began to suffer panic attacks on the train.  Visits to the doctor and several sessions of counselling had little impact and then quite by chance I came across a leaflet that on one side exactly described his symptoms and on the other explained how hypnotherapy could help.

My husband started regular sessions of hypnotherapy with Gary Johannes, of Inspired to Change.  Almost instantly he started to feel better and within a few weeks he was back at work.  I was fascinated by the power of hypnotherapy and started to look into training courses.

As if it was meant to be, we received an email from Gary to say that he was starting a CPHT Hypnotherapy training course in Peterborough.  The Clifton Practice Hypnotherapy Training (CPHT) is a nationwide training provider of the only nationally recognised hypnotherapy diploma in the UK – the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD).

I already knew just how powerful this form of hypnotherapy was and so had no concerns about the subject of the course itself however I was nervous about my own ability to study after all these years.  Gary was very reassuring, he explained that it was a very practical course where you are encouraged to start seeing clients from the very beginning and you are well supported throughout.  The academic side clearly explained and you are given plenty of time to complete the work.

I thoroughly enjoyed doing this course; it stretched me and I learnt so much about myself, as well as how to really help and make a difference to my clients.

Don’t let age or lack of self-belief stop you from training to become a hypnotherapist by taking this course; it is good to stretch yourself and discover what you are truly capable of.  Think of all the good you can do, for so many people.

If you’ve been inspired by Sarah’s story, why not take charge of your future too and apply to be on our next course.  Training is over 10 months and you’ll be working towards the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD), the only nationally recognised and independently assessed hypnotherapy qualification in the UK.  Click here to apply now
